How NOT to get a free smartphone from Sprint

HTC EVO 4G
I'm having a blast in San Francisco. Sheila spent a long weekend with me, and now I'm attending ad:tech. Guess which part I like more?

And while I'm here, I've been continuing my "Give Evo an EVO" movement. Thus far, I've posted 27 videos of me pining for the new HTC EVO from Sprint. Hey, if you name a phone after me you should expect me to ask to be one of the people who get the sneak preview.

Here's the one from last night:

If this is the first time you're hearing about this, don't be surprised. I haven't pushed it very hard, outside of linking my YouTube account to Twitter. That's partly because I'm curious what YouTube can do on it's own. My answer: not much. Surprise! It needs pushing. I get 10s of views on videos that I don't push, with a mix of visits from Twitter and some searching on the keywords. And as you'll tell from the comments on the videos, the searchers aren't too happy with my daily habit. :)

But some of you have noticed. There's a Facebook Page for the Give Evo an EVO movement, and it wasn't set up by me. Promise. Nor did I request it be set up for me. Yes, I obviously know the person who did set it up. Thanks, Corey! So if you'd like to become a fan of like become a fan of the page, that'll help.

Some notable episodes if you don't want to wade through all 27 (and future) episodes:

So... time to push. Hey, I'm no David Lynch. And I know that some videos are more creative than others. The later in the day, the lower the creativity. Maybe I should do this in the morning? Sorry. Sidetracked.

Go watch some videos. Share and like some videos. And let's see if we can get Evo to give me, Evo, an EVO.

More video silliness: Twitter Uncovered: History and Monetization Revealed!

It's been one of those months. Sorry. But though I've been neglecting the blog, I've not been neglecting fun.

Here's a bit of stupidity that Jeff and I came up with some time ago that has finally been green-lit. Green-lighted? Green-lanterened? Anyhow, it's all about the little-known monitization angle and history of Twitter.

Or maybe we just made it all up. My money is on the latter.

And if you missed what kicked this off, here's the two of us pontificating on social media. Yes, we're serious about being not serious some times. And all the props go to Joe Holt for shooting and editing. He truly is the man.

Five Twitter Twooisms for Social Media 101

2008-09-11 Social Media Club Phoenix edition
I like Social Media Club Phoenix for a lot of reasons. Right now, I like it because it gives me a reason to make a blog post. Those have been light as of late. Sorry about that.

This Thursday, I've once again been asked to put on Social Media 101. Just like all the other times, this is the perfect chance to get some real-world, hands-on experience on topics that seem obvious to everyone but you. Asking questions of "social media experts" is sometimes daunting, especially when they are talking way over your head. We don't do that during the SM 101 portion of Social Media Club Phoenix. It's a safe place to get up to speed before the full meeting starts.

This week, I'm taking on Twitter. As if you couldn't tell by the topic. I'll cover these five things:
  • Why it’s OK to Follow people you aren’t friends with
  • Why yes, all those fields in your profile are important
  • A picture is worth a thousand characters
  • The evils of auto-DMs
  • Desktop & mobile apps to keep you sane

Social Media 101 kicks off promptly at 5:30. We only have :45 minutes to roll through this stuff, as the full meeting starts at 6:30. So get there a bit early and be ready to go. I figure it'll take me half an hour to cover my stuff, leaving you 15 minutes to ask questions.

After we're done, Social Media Club Phoenix will be hosting a panel discussion called "Your Novice Is Showing". Sounds perfect. And those who attend SM101 will be less-novice than they were just an hour earlier.

See you at Jobing.com HQ!

Why I tweet out when I eat out

KabukiImage by boutmuet via Flickr

Many of us have a habit of tweeting where we're eating. We use Twitpic to take snaps of the food we're eating. We tweet about the food, the service and the place in general.

We do this for many reasons. Some of us are compulsive tweeters. Some of us consider it a badge of honor, that we're fully exploring the tool. Some of us want people to come and join us. And some of you want us to just shut up about it already.

All are valid points. Even the last. :)

But sometimes this tweating (tweeting + eating, get it?) can have immediate benefits for the tweet-or. Take the case of Julia and Kabuki, recounted on Tyler's blog. Short version: Julia live-tweeted her experience inside Kabuki and received free lobster. There's more to it than that, but since this about Twitter, I thought I'd pay homage to the 140 character limitation.

One word of caution: don't tweet out what you wouldn't say out loud. They're listening. :)
